What most brands sell: gold plated

Gold plated jewelry is made by depositing a thin layer of gold onto a base metal (usually brass or copper) through electroplating. That layer is typically less than 0.5 microns thick.

The result: after a few weeks or months of regular wear, the layer wears off, the base metal shows through, and pieces tarnish, turn green, or irritate sensitive skin.

What we use: 14k gold filled

Gold filled is a completely different category. A layer of 14k gold is mechanically bonded — under heat and pressure — to a brass core. The gold content must be at least 1/20th of the total piece by weight. That's roughly 100 times more gold than standard gold plated jewelry.

A well-cared-for 14k gold filled piece can last 10 to 30 years without tarnishing.
